Description
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide consisting of seven amino acids with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. First described in the late 1980s, it is derived from the 4–10 fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and modified with a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide tail to enhance stability and resist enzymatic degradation compared to the native ACTH fragment.
The peptide has a molecular formula of C37H51N9O10S (free acid form) and a molar mass of approximately 813.93 g/mol (826.92 g/mol as the acetate salt). Its CAS number is 80714-61-0. Semax is supplied as a white to off-white lyophilized powder that dissolves readily in water. The Pro-Gly-Pro extension is a structural motif commonly used in peptide chemistry to protect against prolyl endopeptidase cleavage.
