Description
MOTS-c is a synthetic 16-amino-acid peptide with the sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR. Its molecular formula is C101H152N28O22S2, with a molecular weight of 2,174.6 g/mol and CAS number 1627580-64-6. First reported in 2015, MOTS-c is unusual because it is encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA, placing it within the class of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs). The sequence is located in the 12S rRNA gene of mitochondrial DNA, a region previously thought to be non-coding.
MOTS-c is part of a growing family of MDPs, a relatively new category of peptides identified within the mitochondrial genome. Supplied as a white to off-white lyophilized powder, it dissolves readily in water and should be stored refrigerated at 2–8°C (36–46°F).
